WELCOME 2010 FROM THE TEAM AT STUDIO RED DUST

It’s hard to believe that we are already into February 2010. 2009 seemed to pass in the blink of an eye, and along with it all the fear and uncertainty associated with the GFC. Still admidst all the perceived doom and gloom, 2009 was an eventful year for myself and Studio Red Dust. We tackled the year with a slightly more hands on approach, not quite as much travel as is probably usual but a stronger local emphasis. I worked on some great corporate and commissioned projects based around the city and we set up in at the King St Gallery for a 6 month city based exhibition. Spending more time in the city gave me some much needed location motivation and I made a great start on my Perth Urban series which I will continue to work on this year. Even so I still managed photographic trips to Karijini, the very remote (and windy) Dirk Hartog Island, Broome and a late trip along the South Coast. A few of the related images are featured in this newsletter and a few more will be appearing on our website soon...

2010 has started optimistically and it looks to be a fairly progressive time ahead. Aside from some scheduled photographic trips I have already planned for the Pilbara, Abrolhos Islands and the Kimberley, we here at Studio Red Dust are looking to promote our quality fine art printing services further into the marketplace. Our existing printing clients already know about the high quality services that we offer and now we want to get the word out a little further afield. It is a unique, specialised component of Studio Red Dust that now stands firmly in its own right. We have recently completed exhibition printing and production for 2 new shows and several corporate office fit outs utilizing client images and my own images which have proved to be very successful.

Also on the agenda are a series of select guest artists exhibitions that we will be hosting in the Gallery over the next couple of months. Beginning with Craig Buchanan's "America" exhibition later this month and followed by Rebecca Dagnall in association with Foto Freo. Make sure you get along and support our talented photographers. We are very pleased to be able to host these exciting bodies of work and we will keep you informed of further exhibitions planned for later in the year.

Above all else we hope to keep you our valued reader a little more informed this year. I encourage you to contact us with any queries or feedback you may have. FORM P.H.otography 2009

Since 2008 Paul has been the lead photographer for the P.H.otography Workshop Series that run once a year up in the Pilbara. His mentoring role was to share his extensive knowledge and skills with what has been a very eager and talented group of participants. He also helped co-ordinate the additional guest photographers over the 3 weekend program who have been so generous and entertaining with there knowledge and contributions. Thank you Christian Fletcher, Bill Shalor, John Elliot, Mervyn Bishop & Stephen Scourfield.

Paul’s hands on approach and personable nature made him very popular with the locals, many of whom have since visited us at the studio. 2010 is the final year of this three year regional development program run by FORM and sponsored by BHP Billiton Iron Ore. Later this month FORM will be running an exhibition of 100 of the curated works at The Courthouse Gallery in Port Hedland. All the printing and framing was done by us at Studio Red Dust. The aim of the workshops was to try and increase understanding and awareness of different artistic endeavours and how they could be utilised to help sustain and engage these Pilbara communities. Having frequently travelled the northern parts of our state Paul has a great affinity for the region and its communities. Being involved in the workshops has been a very satisfying and rewarding experience for him. WORK IN SITU

How do you get a 5 meter framed canvas up to an 18th floor office when it won’t fit up the stairs and the lift is definately out of the question? Well, the answer involves, 100 meters of rope, 5 helpers and lots of patience on a very hot Perth afternoon! For the full story check out the link here.
